Def. Regular Expression, commonly referred to as RegEx,  is a string of characters that define a search pattern.

For example:

^P….e$

The above code defines a RegEx pattern. The pattern is: any six letter string beginning with a ‘p’ and ending with a ‘e’.

Patterns defined using RegEx can be used to match against a string as shown below:

Precise No Match

 

Regular Expression is super powerful in searching and manipulating text strings, particularly in processing text files.

One line of regex can easily replace several dozen lines of programming codes.
