Def. Three-factor authentication (3FA) uses identity-confirming credentials from three separate categories when a user attempts to log into their account. These categories are the knowledge (typically username and password), possession (one-time password tokens received via smartphones with OTP apps, employee ID cards and SIM cards) and inherence categories (fingerprint scans, iris scans, voice recognition, etc).
Three Factor Authentication (3FA) simply takes Two Factor Authentication to the next level of log-in security.
