This makes cyberbullying one of the most common forms of bullying nowadays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-big-is-the-problem\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__heading1\">How Big is the Problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote reader-text-block__quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cyberbullies can hide behind a mask of anonymity online and do not need direct physical access to their victims to do\u00a0unimaginable harm.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Inspirational speaker, writer and community leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnnaMariaChavez?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anna Maria Chavez<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2022\/12\/15\/teens-and-cyberbullying-2022\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2022\/12\/15\/teens-and-cyberbullying-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Pew Research study<\/a>\u00a0found that <mark style=\"background-color:#f1e6ff\" class=\"has-inline-color\">nearly half,\u00a046% of U.S. teens,\u00a0<\/mark>experienced some form of cyberbullying. The most vulnerable are older teen girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Only <mark style=\"background-color:#f1e6ff\" class=\"has-inline-color\">four in ten teachers<\/mark><strong> <\/strong>are good at helping students with online harassment. Additionally, <mark style=\"background-color:#f1e6ff\" class=\"has-inline-color\">one in three parents (33%) <\/mark>have been reported as not supportive enough when it comes to addressing cyberbullying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-effect-of-cyberbullying-on-students\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Effect of Cyberbullying on Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"background-color:#f1e6ff\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Just like face-to-face bullying, cyberbullying can have\u00a0destructive effects<\/mark>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drops in school grades and\/or loss of interest in education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low self-esteem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hostile behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suicidal tendencies (Cyberbullying victims under 25 are more than twice as likely to self-harm and develop\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/13\/nyregion\/nj-teen-suicide-bullying-school.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suicidal tendencies<\/a>, according to a\u00a0study).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Cyberbullying has effects beyond self-harm as well. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.javelinstrategy.com\/coverage-area\/2018-child-identity-fraud-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Javelin Research<\/a> study explains that children who are cyberbullied are 9 times more likely to fall victim to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/more-than-1-million-children-had-their-identities-stolen-in-2017-2018-04-24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identity fraud<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-can-your-school-do-to-stop-cyberbullying\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__heading1\">What Can Your School Do to Stop Cyberbullying?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote reader-text-block__quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>School administrators can\u2019t say it\u2019s up to the parents. To prevent further harassment via Google Docs, audit shared files regularly, searching for keywords related to harmful behavior and unusual edit history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-teach-students-about-cybersecurity-and-being-safe-online\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__heading2\">2. Teach Students about Cybersecurity and Being Safe Online<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Raising students\u2019 awareness about cybersecurity is imperative today, especially when they spend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.educause.edu\/ecar\/research-publications\/ecar-study-of-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology\/2018\/a-day-in-the-online-life-of-a-student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most of their time<\/a>&nbsp;online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Cybersecurity awareness sessions yield remarkable results in tackling issues like cyberbullying and online safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Consider offering them on a regular basis to tackle major things like how to spot, report, and deal with cyberbullying the right way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">These sessions should ideally provide students with a<strong> <\/strong>safe space\u00a0to speak up,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cyberbullying.org\/stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">share their cyberbullying stories<\/a>,\u00a0and get help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-understand-why-bullies-do-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__heading2\">3. Understand Why Bullies Do It<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Most often, bullies lose sight of the consequences of their actions. They can\u2019t explain why they do it because they usually don\u2019t think much about it. However, we all know that executing this strategy isn&#8217;t always simple, whether in the physical world or online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is of utmost importance to let bullied children know that the school stands by them. They need to be assured that help is available to them \u2013 a secure haven they can turn to and a wise confidant they can trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-teach-kids-to-recognize-bullying\" class=\"wp-block-heading reader-text-block__heading2\">5.
