Chapter 4: How to Measure and Improve Student Engagement in Google Classroom?<\/h2>\n

A common challenge to online teaching is measuring classroom engagement. Again, this can be tricky when you\u2019re not face-to-face in a traditional classroom environment.<\/p>\n

So, how can we engage our students, check for understanding, and assess things remotely?<\/p>\n

In this chapter of our\u00a0Complete Guide to Online Teaching in Google Workspace<\/a> series, we’ll show how to just do that.<\/p>\n\n

1. Let them Lead the Way\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nYou’d be surprised at how involving students in the teaching process can improve their overall engagement.\n\nBy giving students a choice, they\u2019ll learn, become creators, and gain more confidence. In return, they may take ownership of their tasks and ultimately ”stay engaged”<\/strong>.\n\nOne thing you may consider is providing\u00a0choice boards<\/strong>\u00a0for students.<\/span>\n\nA choice board is similar to a menu, where you create different tasks or choices for students to pick from. They can demonstrate their learning in the way they choose and create accordingly.\n\nSimply look at the lesson activities and \u201crefresh\u201d them to include choice boards.<\/span>\n\n

2. Ensure Lessons Are Actually Engaging in the Digital Context<\/strong><\/h3>\nAn engaging lesson is designed around creativity, choice, and interaction.\n\nYour Google tools and apps can help you provide engaging content for lessons, and so can other third-party tools.\n\nFor example:\"student\n\n<\/span>\n\n\n

3. Measure Student Engagement Using Google Workspace Data<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/span>\n\n\n\nOne of the best things about teaching in Google Workspace is that you can get data on almost every important interaction.\n\nFrom there, you can measure things like student engagement even better than you would in the physical classroom. <\/span>\n\n\n\n<\/span>\n\n One of the first areas you’ll want to check to assess student engagement is Classroom attendance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\n\n\n\nBy attendance, we don’t mean the simple act of logging in and out. It’s also making sure students are actively following up, engaged, and contributing while logged in.\n\n\u25aa\ufe0f Google Sheets<\/a> is ideal for recording which students turn up to class and sharing that data with school administrators.\n\n\u25aa\ufe0f Meanwhile, <\/span>GAT Shield<\/a> allows teachers to track times when students were connected to their designated Classrooms, monitor how long they stayed in the Classroom, and how much time they spent on every site while browsing in Google Chrome sessions.<\/span>\n\nThat way, you get a complete sense of real attendance.\n

4. Champion Student Screen Monitoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/span>\n\n How do you ensure that students are paying attention and not distracted by side activities during Class?<\/em>\n\n<\/span>\n\n In the physical classroom, teachers would simply go behind the students\u2019 desks to check if they\u2019re distracted by side activities. However, this has never been easy and is not really feasible for the digital classroom.\n\nThe good news is, with student screen monitoring tools like Teacher Assist<\/a>, you can see what\u2019s happening during class on any student\u2019s screen in real-time\n\n<\/span>\n\n You can also take prompt actions to refocus students\u2019 attention, such as closing irrelevant tabs for students, blocking a website during class, or even pushing open tabs and locking student screens.\n
