Chapter 5: Google Classroom from Your Students\u2019 Perspective<\/h2>\nMany teachers are familiar with Google Classroom but have a hard time organizing information there. That\u2019s because teachers don’t see the student\u2019s perspective on things.<\/span><\/span>\n\nThis chapter of our <\/span>Guide to Online Teaching in Google Workspace<\/a> series <\/span>will show you what your students see when they open Google Classroom.<\/span>\n\nThis is important to understand\u00a0<\/span>what your students can (and can\u2019t) access in each of Google Classroom\u2019s streams.\n\n<\/span>\n\n From there, you can spot any Classroom gaps, as well as eliminate any distractions or disruptions that may occur while delivering your lessons.\n

<\/span><\/h3>\nWhat the Traditional Google Classroom Student View Looks Like:<\/strong> <\/span>\n\nStudents enter the Classroom using one of the following:\n\n<\/span>\n\n\n

  1. A\u00a0code<\/strong>\u00a0you\u2019ve shared with them.<\/li>\n \t
  2. An invitation<\/strong>\u00a0you\u2019ve sent them.<\/li>\n \t
  3. An\u00a0invite link<\/strong>\u00a0you\u2019ve shared with them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nWhen students enter the Classroom, they’ll see three pages:\n\n<\/span>\n\n\n

      Stream Page\n<\/strong><\/h4>\nThink of this as the class wall.\u00a0<\/span>It displays a collection of all of the posting activities, not organized. On the stream page, students can view announcements and\/or post-class comments, depending on their posting permissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

        Classwork Page\n<\/strong><\/h4>\nHere, students will see an organized view of all the assignments, questions, and materials<\/strong> posted to the class.\nAdditionally, they\u2019ll be able to open assignments and view their grade and the feedback provided by their teacher.\n\n\u25aa\ufe0f Assignments: <\/strong>Students can open their assignments and create a Google app file within the assignment.\nThey can also support their learning by uploading a file from Drive or their local device, attaching a link, or a YouTube video. Additionally, students can leave private comments for their teacher on an assignment.\u00a0 This is only visible between the teacher and the student. It\u2019s also a crucial part of e-learning because it opens up dialogue and conversation with students. <\/span> Providing quick and quality feedback to your students is essential to helping them learn and be successful.<\/span>\n\n\u25aa\ufe0f\u00a0Questions: <\/strong>Teachers have two options for posting questions: multiple-choice or short answer.\nPosting questions to the class is a great way to poll the students to check for understanding. The responses can be seen for the entire class, and students have the option to reply to one another.\n\n\u25aa\ufe0f Materials: <\/strong>Students can view the materials the teacher posts that pertain to their class or assignment.\nAn example of this is posting classroom etiquette and digital expectations as a material post so that students can refer back to it at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

          People Page\n<\/strong><\/h4>\nHere, they’ll see a list of classmates and a list of their teachers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Recommendations:<\/h3>\n

          1. Test Student\n<\/strong>Create a\u00a0<\/span>\u201ctest student\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>account in your school domain and be a student in your own class to see things from the student\u2019s view.\u00a0 This will help you understand how to organize and post information better on the Classwork page.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n \t
          2. Topics\n<\/strong>Having topics on your Classwork page allows students to find your assignments more easily.\u00a0 You can create topics for the day, week, or unit.\u00a0 For example, create a topic that reads \u201cWk of 02\/11\/2022\u201d. Then, you can post your assignments to that topic using a numbering scheme, such as \u201c#123\u201d. <\/span>This will direct students to find the current information faster and display it in an organized list.<\/li>\n \t
          3. Close the Feedback Loop\n<\/strong>Finally, make sure to \u2018close the feedback loop\u2019. Because we\u2019re working through our screens, it\u2019s crucial to provide quality and actionable feedback on student assignments in an effective manner.
