How to keep students safe in Google Workspace for Education?\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 25px;\"><!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/span>\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph --> From\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/education\/blog\/how-to-stop-cyberbullying-at-your-school-in-5-steps\/\">cyberbullying\u00a0<\/a>to phishing scams and profane content, as students spend more time online, student protection becomes a major concern for everyone.\n\nIt&#8217;s why there are Acts like the <a href=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/education\/cipa-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children\u2019s Internet Protection Act (CIPA)<\/a> \u2014 and schools need to stay compliant. The good news is that there are a few ways teachers can help.\n\nIn t<span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">his chapter of our <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/education\/blog\/online-teaching-guide-in-google-workspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guide to Online Teaching in Google Workspace<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"> series,\u00a0<\/span>we&#8217;ll show you a few effective ways to keep students safe in Google Workspace for Education.<\/span>\n<h3>1. Teach them about Digital Citizenship<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 25px;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span>\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph --> Raising your students\u2019 cyber awareness is their first line of defense against online danger, the new \u2018Stranger Danger\u2019. One way to do that in a fun and gamified environment is to have them complete <a href=\"https:\/\/beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com\/en_us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google&#8217;s Be Internet Awesome<\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 25px;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/span>\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} -->\n\nThe five pillars of the curriculum are:\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 25px;\"><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/span>\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n \t<li><strong>Be Internet Smart<\/strong> \u2013 share with care<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Be Internet Alert<\/strong> \u2013 don\u2019t fall for fake<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Be Internet Strong<\/strong> \u2013 secure your secrets<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Be Internet Kind<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s cool to be kind<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Be Internet Brave<\/strong> \u2013 when in doubt, talk it out<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Prevent Students from Reusing Class Meetings<\/h3>\nUnsupervised class meetings can bring in a whole range of issues.\n\nTo make sure students don\u2019t rejoin a class meeting after it has ended, Google recommends using nicknamed meetings instead of starting a meeting from a Google Calendar event.\n\nEven if you reuse the same nickname, participants will not be able to rejoin after the final participant has left, and the 10-digit meeting code will no longer work.\n\nThere are two ways to create nickname meetings:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Go to meet.google.com or the Meet mobile apps and enter a meeting nickname in the &#8220;Join or start a meeting\u201d field.\nOR<\/li>\n \t<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/edu\/classroom\/answer\/9776888?hl=en&amp;authuser=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Meet code automatically generated by Google Classroom<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>3. Limit Public Access to Student Information<\/h3>\nOne very important step to ensure from your side is that your student&#8217;s information is not publicly available. That includes access to student work, student photographs, videos, etc.\n\nAlso, make sure not to publish confidential education records (grades, student ID numbers, etc.) for public viewing on the Internet.\n<h3>4. Adopt Google Workspace student monitoring tools<\/h3>\nStudent monitoring tools help schools add an additional (and essential) layer of security to your domain.\n\nThe GAT for Education toolset, for example, protects students on every site while connected to their Google Workspace school account in the Chrome browser.
