{"id":1917,"date":"2022-01-10T19:26:55","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T19:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/?post_type=docs&#038;p=1917"},"modified":"2022-02-15T12:19:15","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T12:19:15","password":"","slug":"how-to-find-and-fix-orphaned-google-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"docs","link":"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/tech-tips\/how-to-find-and-fix-orphaned-google-classrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"How to find and fix Orphaned Google Classrooms?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Orphaned Google Classrooms are Google Classrooms where the <strong>owner<\/strong> account of the <strong>classroom<\/strong> (teacher&#8217;s account) is <strong>deleted<\/strong>, so the classroom becomes orphaned (the classroom has no owner).<\/p>\n<p>And just like unattended physical classrooms, Orphaned Google Classrooms can get super messy and bring K-12 IT teams unexpected admin pains when left unfixed\/ unattended.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, students can post inappropriate content there, share fake news, even have unchecked conversations, etc.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why as a K-12 admin it&#8217;s very important to <a href=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/education\/blog\/k-12-admins-ultimate-google-classroom-audit-checklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audit<\/a> these classrooms regularly, especially when performing start and end of school year Google Classroom tasks.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #4d39e9;\">How to find Orphaned Google Classrooms?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>First, when a Google Classroom becomes orphaned you&#8217;ll see these tell-tale signs:<br \/>\n-&#8216;<strong>Unknown User&#8217; <\/strong>is displayed for the Classroom owner on the Classroom homepage and in the Stream.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0The teacher account is removed completely from the <strong>People page<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>GAT+ &gt; Classroom<\/strong> you can filter and find classrooms where the <strong>owner is deleted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1918\" src=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/2022-01-10-17_57_47-GAT.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1385\" height=\"718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/2022-01-10-17_57_47-GAT.png 1385w, https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/2022-01-10-17_57_47-GAT-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/2022-01-10-17_57_47-GAT-1024x531.png 1024w, https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/2022-01-10-17_57_47-GAT-768x398.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1385px) 100vw, 1385px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #4d39e9;\">How to fix Orphaned Google Classrooms?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are two ways to address these Classrooms:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I. Change Ownership of Orphaned Google Classrooms to another teacher:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(This is ideal for when you don&#8217;t want to lose these classrooms, but would only like to\u00a0 fix their orphaned status)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reactivate the \u201cdeleted\u201d owner account.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gatlabs.com\/knowledge\/tech-tips\/how-to-change-ownership-of-a-google-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Change ownership<\/a>\u00a0of these classrooms to any other teacher in your domain.<\/li>\n<li>Re-delete or suspend the now &#8216;previous owner&#8217;s account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>II. Delete or Archive Orphaned Google Classrooms:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reactivate the \u201cdeleted\u201d owner account.<\/li>\n<li>Delete or archive any Google Classrooms under that account.<\/li>\n<li>Re-delete or suspend the now &#8216;previous owner&#8217;s account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i>PRO TIP: While you&#8217;re there you may also want to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">identify and delete unused Google Classrooms<\/span> on your domain, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ml-uD3-RDZc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>here\u2019s how<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Closing thoughts:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Co-teachers in Orphaned Google Classrooms:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen a Google Classroom is orphaned, existing co-teachers will still be able to access the classroom. However, unless the deleted account of the primary teacher (owner) is reactivated you won&#8217;t be able to transfer ownership to co-teachers, or any other teachers in your domain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transfer Classroom Ownership before offboarding:<\/strong><br \/>\nMake sure to transfer Classroom ownership before deleting the original owner\u2019s account when offboarding teachers.
