How the American School of Brasilia Empowers its Google Workspace Security

Nestled between the embassies of downtown Brasilia, sits a long-standing and diverse international school offering an English-language-based K-12 curriculum.
The Director of Technology of The American School of Brasilia (Escola Americana de Brasília – EAB) is Vamshi Mugatha, an experienced technologist with a background in networking and security and broad experience in the corporate world and Educational IT.

Challenge
Use Case
GAT+ was already deployed in EAB when Vamshi took up his role. He didn’t need to go out looking for a solution as GAT did everything he needed, from one-click reports for reviewing suspicious logins to auditing installed third-party applications that are (and are not) being used across the domain.
GAT helps Vamshi visualize everything that has happened in the domain environment. Every week he receives scheduled reports giving him an overview of outside-domain shares which he can easily remediate in a few simple clicks.
The GAT team delivered a training session to Vamshi which he found very useful in understanding the capabilities and functionality of the tool. “The tool has so many pieces. GAT brings it all together in one single screen which makes life a lot easier to manage Google Drive. It’s very user-friendly.”
“With GAT, we can do lots of things. Firstly we can see if a student is using a VPN or if there’s suspicious activity. We have a scheduled report that tells us how many activities, what exactly is happening if there’s a false positive, what they have accessed, where they are accessing from, and if they have changed their password, I can drill right down into a specific user IP address.”
“Without GAT, it would be a security nightmare. For us to go and get information if there’s been an incident, it could take days or even months. With GAT, on the same screen, I can remediate immediately. We also have Chromebooks and can identify their location and disable them if necessary.”
“We get requests; for example, a school principal may need access to Google Classroom to examine attendance. If I didn’t have GAT, I would have to spend a lot of time pulling this together. It’s so much more efficient for me to use GAT rather than do these things manually.”
“Teachers regularly request Google add-ons for their classroom and it would be easy to lose track but with GAT, I can see all the apps and who is using what and when, or also if nobody is using it. I can get all kinds of stats and can easily remove unnecessary tools from the system.”
Results
Given its features and functionality, Vamshi is very definite about including GAT as part of his overall IT strategy going forward.
“Budgets in schools can be tight, and since the pandemic, security has been a top priority. Admins need to take control of the Google Workspace environment. GAT is an all-in-one tool that gives much flexibility and control over the whole domain. Because GAT is so user-friendly, I don’t need to send anyone on expensive training courses!”
