How International School of Prague Keeps Students Safe without Removing their Flexibility

Founded in 1948, The International School of Prague (ISP) has a long history of educational excellence in the Czech Republic. Surrounded by forestry on the outskirts of the city, ISP is a not-for-profit International Baccalaureate (IB) School and has been using Google for Education for a number of years. With an enrollment of just 950 students from ages 3 to 17 years, across 64 nationalities of varying religious beliefs and socio-economic backgrounds, ISP’s diversity goes far deeper than its globality. Sheldon Bradshaw is the Director of Educational Technology at ISP and is the Google Super Administrator.

Enforcing a “cookie cutter” policy and limiting technology tools is not what ISP is about. It’s more about putting the right tools in the hands of those who need them and Sheldon’s challenge is supporting this freedom and diversity.

“We've got kids from various socio-economic backgrounds, international backgrounds, religious beliefs, ages, we really are quite a diverse school and that's one of the strengths.”

“We pride ourselves on being very student engaged. There's a lot of learning freedom and choice for both students and employees, and as a result, there's not a lot of logic in how things are done which can be a challenge on the infrastructure front”

“There are a lot of plugins, and there's a lot of flexibility, and we tend not to block a lot of things which means people deviate. We have been an IB Diploma school for a long time and have kicked off becoming a full IB continuing school all the way through, which brings in yet more agency and more inquiry.”

“As soon as you give people choice and flexibility, they go off in different directions, so you need a tool to support that.”

The challenge for Sheldon was finding a tool that could manage and audit this very ‘fluid’ environment and keep his students safe without removing their flexibility. “We need to know how to find files, how to change file permissions, how to find that one thing we did a few years ago because that’s what those students need now and they want it back again.”

Use Case

The focus at ISP is on being agile and adapting to the ever-changing learning needs of teachers and students.

“With a school our size, we have this kind of flexibility. When a teacher leaves, it’s not always an exact replacement. You’d have a teacher who might be teaching English and chemistry and the next person is teaching chemistry and biology. It’s about finding the specific information they need and giving them access to only the relevant files. Google tools are not designed for that and that’s where GAT comes in.”

Sheldon looked at other tools where the Admin had unrestricted access to read any emails or files across the domain. GAT Security Officer feature only allows Admins to do this with approval from an appointed Security Officer.

“While having immediate read access might make my job easy, I lose a lot of credibility with the organisation knowing that that’s possible. This feature makes GAT unique in the marketplace”

Conclusion

Sheldon finds that GAT strikes the balance between power and usability. “We don’t use GAT every day. No, but when we need it, it’s the only thing that we’ve got that can actually do the job”

“The support is pretty spectacular and that’s definitely a differentiator in the industry. Another thing is GAT’s focus on security and data. Our metadata is stored in a safe and secure way and our users are protected. GAT has a really grounded approach and best practice management that not a lot of other vendors have.”
